Number of Homeless Children in Uk Highest Since Records Began: ‘a Genuine Humanitarian Crisis’

A record 151,630 children in England are now homeless and living in temporary accommodation, as the homelessness crisis reaches unprecedented levels. Government figures reveal 117,450 households were living in temporary accommodation like B&Bs as of March 31, 2024, marking a 12.3% increase from last year. London has the highest concentration, with 17.8 households per 1,000 affected.

Lord John Bird, founder of The Big Issue, condemned the crisis as “appalling” and urged immediate government action to address poverty, a key driver of homelessness. Dave Robinson from housing charity Riverside highlighted the inhumane conditions many families face, stressing the need for more social housing and government investment.

Additionally, the figures show a rise in Section 21 eviction notices, a major contributor to homelessness. Charities support Labour’s plan to ban such evictions, as part of broader efforts to reform housing and prevent homelessness.
